Chase Elliott Foundation “DESI9N TO DRIVE”

Returns to Home Track to Benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

Chase Elliott Foundation “DESI9N TO DRIVE”

The Chase Elliott Foundation is partnering again with NAPA and Hendrick Motorsports in a return to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the seventh edition of its “DESI9N TO DRIVE” art collaboration with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s). Elliott's race car and race uniform, from head to toe, will feature designs by two cancer patients at Children's for the NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, July 9.

“I’m excited for the return of the DESI9N TO DRIVE program to my home track since it really shines a light on the positive impact Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has on the region,” said Elliott, a Dawsonville, Ga. native. “With the race being run at night, I hope it creates an even greater atmosphere than years past. I can’t wait for everyone to see these summer nights-themed designs come to life at the race track.”

This year's DESI9N TO DRIVE program received dozens of submissions from patients at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's. The selected designs were sketched by 11-year-old Alex Corbin and 13-year-old Kayleb Duran-Rodriguez.

After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2022, Alex went through surgeries, radiation, chemo, MRI tests, therapy, and now wears hearing aids due to side effects of chemo treatments. His design shows his love for smores on warm summer nights and will be depicted on Elliott’s Alpinestars racing suit, gloves, shoes, and Arai helmet.

Kayleb, diagnosed with Leukemia in 2020, designed Elliott’s No. 9 NAPA Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to show his love for campfires with friends and family.

“We are pleased to support this wonderful campaign and the kids at Children's  for another year,” said Marti Walsh, vice president of marketing, NAPA. “We’re so proud of our longstanding relationship with the Chase Elliott Foundation and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and are excited to see the impact this event has on the greater Atlanta community every year.”

The DESI9N TO DRIVE program has raised and donated over $350,000 to Children’s over its first six years.

Elliott's racing uniform and a VIP race experience are being auctioned off via The NASCAR Foundation’s auction page on eBay beginning Wednesday, July 5, and closing Wednesday, July 12, following the Atlanta race.

New for this year is the ability for fans to donate directly to the fundraising campaign starting today at desi9ntodrive.org.

All auction proceeds will go to the Chase Elliott Foundation to benefit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s. In addition, a portion of the proceeds of each die-cast sold of the specially-designed race car will be donated with the auction proceeds and online donations.

“Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is thankful to collaborate with the Chase Elliott Foundation for the seventh year of DESI9N TO DRIVE,” said Beth Buursema, senior development director at the Children's Foundation. “We are very excited that two of our patients will have the chance to show off their creativity at an event that they will never forget. The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is one of the largest pediatric cancer and blood disorders programs in the nation, caring for more than 8,900 pediatric patients every year. This continued collaboration will bring hope to our patients while furthering our mission of making kids better today and healthier tomorrow.”

Race fans attending the March 24-26 NASCAR at COTA weekend at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) doubled their 2022 donations to Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC), the official charity of Speedway Motorsports, by contributing more than $30,000 that will benefit Austin-area children this year.

Funds were raised throughout the three-day EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix tripleheader weekend through:

  • Laps for Charity: Race fans experienced driving their own vehicle around the 3.41-mile, 20-turn permanent road course behind an official NASCAR at COTA Toyota pace car.

“We are blown away by the generosity of race fans who participated in our fundraising events during the NASCAR at COTA event weekend,” Speedway Children’s Charities National Executive Director Lisa Starnes said. “We were hoping to build off of the momentum that was created last year when we first introduced Speedway Children’s Charities to the Austin, Texas fan base, but to double what we raised last year is absolutely incredible. We are so thankful and can’t wait to distribute these funds to even more Austin-area children.”

The NASCAR Foundation Partners with Martinsville Speedway for Third-Annual Speediatrics Fun Day Festival

The NASCAR Foundation Partners with Martinsville Speedway for Third-Annual Speediatrics Fun Day Festival

On Friday, April 9th, The NASCAR Foundation partnered with Martinsville Speedway to host its third-annual Speediatrics Fun Day Festival with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge, providing special programming for children at its Uptown and Center Club sites.

This NASCAR-themed Speediatrics Fun Day Festival is the culminating event after a 2-week program designed to inspire more than 100 children to lead a healthy lifestyle. In addition to learning about healthy living habits through the lens of NASCAR, children participated in NASCAR-themed field day activities such as a Goodyear Tire Race, Champ’s Looking for Lug Nuts, Chase’s Sponge Relay, Safety Sam’s Stop & Go Relay and Pit Stop Pete’s Puzzling Placement to encourage them to stay active while having fun.

“We love partnering with Martinsville Speedway in this community and we couldn’t think of a more impactful way to reach area children than supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge,” said Nichole Krieger, The NASCAR Foundation Executive Director. “Our Speediatrics Fun Day Festivals are really such a fun way for us to connect with children and help communicate the importance of their overall health and wellness.”

The festival is one of eight events to be held in race markets across the country as part of The NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Children’s Fund, a program that supports needs expressed by hospitals, specialty clinics, camps, and others providing children’s medical and healthcare services.

As part of the two-week programming provided, students attending Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge participated in a video call on April 6 with Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell and NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Jeb Burton. On Thursday, the Martinsville Speedway pace car was on display at the club locations and the children decorated a welcome banner that will be displayed at the speedway this weekend during the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 NASCAR Cup Series race.

“Thank you to The NASCAR Foundation for once again bringing its Speediatrics Fun Day Festival to the Martinsville area,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “It is so much fun working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Blue Ridge and spending time with the next generation of NASCAR fans.”

In the days following the event, the kids will participate in a step challenge using pedometer watches from The NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Fit Kits made possible by a generous donation from the Harvest Youth Board. The NASCAR Foundation will also provide a financial grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge to further fund their efforts for kids.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America Announced as Official Youth Community Partner of NASCAR

Boys & Girls Clubs of America Announced as Official Youth Community Partner of NASCAR

NASCAR and Boys & Girls Clubs of America announced a multiyear partnership Sunday that will support the nonprofit’s mission of enabling and enriching the lives of young people. As the Official Youth Community Partner of NASCAR, Boys & Girls Clubs of America will work with NASCAR and industry stakeholders to engage more than 4.6 million youth and teens across the country with NASCAR content and experiences.

The nationwide partnership will focus on three core areas — STEM education, career development and diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives — and extend across all NASCAR platforms and race tracks. Programming will include both virtual and at-track experiences with an emphasis on local Boys & Girls Club locations within NASCAR race markets.

Partnership efforts will build on the continuing work of The NASCAR Foundation to advance children’s well-being, including ongoing relationships with several Boys & Girls Clubs across the country.

“As a community leader, Boys & Girls Clubs of America continues to have immeasurable impact on the lives of our country’s youth, and NASCAR looks forward to engaging those efforts in meaningful ways,” said Steve Phelps, president of NASCAR. “Through this partnership and together with the NASCAR industry, we have boundless opportunities to advance the mission and objectives of Boys & Girls Clubs of America while at the same time introducing young future fans to our great sport.”

Said Boys & Girls Clubs of America president and CEO Jim Clark: “Kids and teens need safe places and caring mentors now more than ever, and local Boys & Girls Clubs around the country are doing whatever it takes to empower youth and build new opportunities so they can achieve every success in life. We are very excited to partner with NASCAR to elevate this support in communities even further, enabling more high-quality programing and experiences that will have a positive impact on kids and teens.”

As young people continue to emerge from the pandemic and navigate virtual learning, the first year of the partnership will focus on developing high-quality education programming that will live on MyFuture, Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s digital learning platform.

Additionally, NASCAR’s work with Boys & Girls Clubs of America will focus on career development and mentoring across a breadth of industry disciplines and will include engagement with industry executives and other employees.

Throughout the partnership, NASCAR will collaborate with drivers, teams and tracks to amplify the sport’s commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and deepen the engagement with Club youth and teens. NASCAR partners will also have the opportunity to integrate with the new partnership, and several partners will look to build on their own longstanding relationships with Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Eric Shanks, CEO and executive producer of FOX Sports, and Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, are both members of the non-profit’s Board of Governors. Shanks attended Boys & Girls Clubs as a youth and is now a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs Alumni Hall of Fame. Next month, Lazarus will serve as chair of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Annual Conference.

NBCUniversal, parent company of NASCAR Premier Partner Xfinity, has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs for nearly 20 years to drive digital equity. The company has opened WiFi-Connected Lift Zones at Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, including an upcoming Martinsville, Virginia, location to celebrate the NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash, to provide a safe space for students to access Internet for free to participate in distance learning and conduct schoolwork.

Coca-Cola is currently celebrating 75 years of partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and is also represented on the non-profit’s Board of Governors. The NASCAR Premier Partner is also a founding sponsor of the non-profit’s Workforce Readiness Strategy, supporting essential skill development, career exploration, employability skills and credentialing, and work-based learning opportunities for young people at Clubs. Coca-Cola, NASCAR and Boys & Girls Clubs of America look forward to partnering.

Toyota’s partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America is focused on closing the opportunity gap for the nation’s youth and inspiring future innovators, problem solvers and leaders who will make a positive impact on the community.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America provides high-quality programming that helps level the playing field and provide opportunities to young people that will help them build the skills they need to become the leaders, innovators and problem-solvers who shape the world.

Nationwide Children's Hospital Patients Championed

Initiative pairs drivers with kids, who are front and center on race weekend

The spot typically reserved in a NASCAR driver's meeting for celebrities and CEOs attending the race was instead occupied by a group of children, ages 2 1/2 to 10 years old. None of them could hide the nervous smiles on their faces, knowing they were about to address a group of people that stretched well into the hundreds and included some of their favorite professional drivers.

"Welcome to Mid-Ohio!" they shouted in unison, instantly lifting everyone off their feet in an infield tent Saturday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and drowning out every noise in the immediate area with uproarious applause.

The applause would seem out of place for just an ordinary 'Welcome', but these were no ordinary kids -- they were champions. Patient champions, to be exact.

With the NASCAR Nationwide Series spending the weekend in the series' title sponsor's backyard, just outside of its home base in Columbus, Ohio, more than 4,000 Nationwide associates were on hand for Saturday's Nationwide Children's Hospital 200. Ten 'patient champions,’ brave children who’ve been diagnosed with various life-altering diseases, were each paired up with a series driver who gave them a VIP experience at the race track as honorary members of each team for the weekend.

In an effort to celebrate the miraculous patients and their courage while raising awareness for the hospital and the care provided to children from all over the world, the 10 drivers/teams/sponsors donated their time and paint schemes to honor those involved. Each paint scheme was specifically designed with each child in mind, including input from each child, too.

From the minute the children were introduced, it was clear that racing took a back seat this weekend.

"We had a little girl named Allie (Norman), who is our patient champion and she has (Acute Lymphoblastic) Leukemia," said Brendan Gaughan, driver of the No. 62 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. "Right now, she is in maintenance, which, anybody that's a daddy in the room, you'll get a tear in your eye. It's a 10-year-old girl with leukemia. You just can't help but crying. But she's doing fantastic.

"I met her (Thursday) at the hauler parade. I went to the baseball game with her, spent some time with her. Amazing little girl. It's amazing how positive most of these children are when they're like that. I got a great stat from Nationwide Children's yesterday. Leukemia, when I was growing up, had a 10 percent mortality rate. So if you got leukemia, it was a 10 percent chance of living. They have that number in pediatric leukemia up to 90 percent. So that's just absolutely amazing how far research has come. The hospital itself is unreal. Totally different than most hospitals you're ever going to see."

Nationwide Children's Hospital, America's third-largest pediatric hospital and research center, has been named one of the best children's hospitals by both U.S. News & World Report and Parents magazines and has more than 1 million patient visits each year from all 50 U.S. states and more than 30 foreign countries.

Researchers at the hospital are also discovering cures for some of the most challenging diseases and complications impacting children, from prematurity to cancer.

"We went to their NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) and I've got a 4 year old and a 2 year old and when we were pregnant, (doctors) told us that 26 weeks is the cutting edge of where they're taking children and they're surviving. I got to see a child born at 22 weeks. The baby was born at 12 ounces. That's your Coca-Cola can," said Gaughan Friday during an emotional press conference. "I used to be stronger at doing this, until I had kids. I used to be able to leave and cry. You know, talk about it and not cry. Now, after having kids, you just think about this stuff, and it's like, 'Oh, man. I'm lucky and happy that mine are healthy.'

"Throughout the year, we go to a lot of places and do a lot of things and a lot of children's deals and it's separate from the race track. It's just something we want to do or NASCAR puts together or a sponsor puts together, but Nationwide Insurance is one of those companies that has committed to spending God knows how many millions of dollars in this hospital. What makes this event special is this series sponsor, how much they've committed to not only the sport of NASCAR and what a great job they've done in our sport, but where they choose to spend their money and their marketing people and their strategic development people, I've got to say (it) might be one of the best in the country when they try to do these things. I'm super impressed with them. We do love coming here, not only because it's a road course, but it is special to be able to do this stuff with the kids."

Sean Tibbs is a 10-year-old boy from Blacklick, Ohio, who loves Legos, soccer, golf, video games and reading -- you know, the normal stuff -- but, like Allie Norman, has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. After seeing signs of improvement in his condition over the past two years, he and his family learned that his leukemia had returned in January, which was then followed by intense treatment and a bone marrow transplant.

He spent Saturday with Joe Gibbs Racing's Elliott Sadler, getting a tour of the No. 11 hauler and even getting to sit atop the pit box for the race, sporting a smile so big you'd think he was just any other 10-year-old kid at his first NASCAR race.

"This is bigger than the race," said Sadler, who gave Tibbs an autographed helmet and even let him sit inside his Toyota Camry and grip the steering wheel. "I think what the Nationwide Children's Hospital does this weekend is absolutely amazing. My son was in the NICU for nine weeks, so I understand a little bit about what these families are going through. For them to be able to come out here and to be a part of our pit crew, for us to show them a little bit of what we do every weekend is definitely a blessing. It's just such a special race. It's so neat that it's so close here to the Nationwide headquarters and the Children's Hospital. They do a good job getting all the families out here to watch the races. It's definitely a neat deal."

Regardless of the outcome of the Nationwide Children's Hospital 200 on Saturday, there were 10 winners. Actually, strike that. There were 10 champions.

The following teams and drivers have generously offered to partner with a Nationwide Children's Hospital Patient Champion for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on August 16, 2014:

  • No. 2 of Brian Scott and Richard Childress Racing -- Paired with Patient Champion Avery Neely
  • No. 6 of Trevor Bayne and Roush Fenway Racing -- Paired with Patient Champion Blake Hames
  • No. 11 of Elliott Sadler and Joe Gibbs Racing -- Paired with Patient Champion Sean Tibbs
  • No. 16 of Ryan Reed and Roush Fenway Racing -- Paired with Patient Champion Dalton Miller

RIR Assists Richmond-Area Nonprofits

More Than a Quarter of a Million Dollars in 2013

Richmond International Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier is pleased to announce the track and its charitable arm – Richmond International Raceway Cares – generated more than a quarter of a million dollars through donations and volunteer opportunities at RIR in 2013.

The Five Days of Giving capped RIR's 2013 charitable giving

“We are proud to say we fueled $284,000 through track donations and volunteer opportunities generated at Richmond International Raceway,” said Bickmeier. “There is always a great need for charitable causes in the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Area and we’re happy to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.”

Monetary and in-kind donations, as well as revenue-generating volunteer opportunities for non-profits during the track’s two NASCAR race weekends in 2013 accounted for the total sum. Additionally, the Richmond International Raceway staff invested nearly 700 volunteer hours for groups such as FeedMore, Virginia Blood Services and RIR Cares Track Laps, a fundraiser at the track where fans can drive their personal vehicles on the track in exchange for a donation.

RIR Cares Track Laps is back in 2014, with dates and sign-up information available at www.rir.com/tracklaps.
