The NASCAR Foundation’s Speedy Bear Brigade

The NASCAR Foundation’s Speedy Bear Brigade

"Speedy Bears” will be delivered to children in hospitals surrounding National Teddy Bear Day

The #NASCAR Foundation’s Speedy Bear Brigade

NASCAR-themed teddy bears are being delivered to children in hospitals across the United States, Mexico and Canada as The NASCAR Foundation and Kaulig Giving join together for the seventh annual Speedy Bear Brigade. This year’s efforts will bring the cumulative total to more than 11,000 Speedy Bears delivered since the program’s inception, providing comfort to children during their hospital stays.

“To have surpassed 10,000 bears delivered in just seven years is truly amazing,” said Nichole Krieger, Executive Director and Vice President, The NASCAR Foundation. “Support from donors like Kaulig Giving, NASCAR partners and all of our wonderful NASCAR fans is so important to help us continue the vision of Betty Jane France to bring comfort to kids in the hospital.”

This year’s efforts mark the biggest to date with 100 hospitals participating in race markets across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The initiative surrounds National Teddy Bear Day on Saturday, Sept. 9, with events in Akron, Ohio, home to Kaulig Giving headquarters, as well as Charlotte, N.C. and Daytona Beach, Fla., home to NASCAR headquarters.

“We’re honored to team up with The NASCAR Foundation to deliver cheer, positivity and comfort to children in hospitals across the country through the Speedy Bear Brigade program,” said Matt Kaulig, team owner of Kaulig Racing and founder of Kaulig Giving. “Our partnership with The NASCAR Foundation continues to grow on and off the track and is a priority for us. All of us share the incredible goal of impacting the communities we love by helping children in need live happier, healthier lives.”

NASCAR fans are encouraged to join the Speedy Bear Brigade by making a $25 donation to The NASCAR Foundation to sponsor a Speedy Bear and send an inspirational message to a child in the hospital. As an additional incentive, Kaulig Giving will match each $25 donation made at NASCARfoundation.org/speedybear for a total gift of $25,000.

The NASCAR Foundation Partners with Martinsville Speedway for Third-Annual Speediatrics Fun Day Festival

The NASCAR Foundation Partners with Martinsville Speedway for Third-Annual Speediatrics Fun Day Festival

On Friday, April 9th, The NASCAR Foundation partnered with Martinsville Speedway to host its third-annual Speediatrics Fun Day Festival with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge, providing special programming for children at its Uptown and Center Club sites.

This NASCAR-themed Speediatrics Fun Day Festival is the culminating event after a 2-week program designed to inspire more than 100 children to lead a healthy lifestyle. In addition to learning about healthy living habits through the lens of NASCAR, children participated in NASCAR-themed field day activities such as a Goodyear Tire Race, Champ’s Looking for Lug Nuts, Chase’s Sponge Relay, Safety Sam’s Stop & Go Relay and Pit Stop Pete’s Puzzling Placement to encourage them to stay active while having fun.

“We love partnering with Martinsville Speedway in this community and we couldn’t think of a more impactful way to reach area children than supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge,” said Nichole Krieger, The NASCAR Foundation Executive Director. “Our Speediatrics Fun Day Festivals are really such a fun way for us to connect with children and help communicate the importance of their overall health and wellness.”

The festival is one of eight events to be held in race markets across the country as part of The NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Children’s Fund, a program that supports needs expressed by hospitals, specialty clinics, camps, and others providing children’s medical and healthcare services.

As part of the two-week programming provided, students attending Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge participated in a video call on April 6 with Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell and NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Jeb Burton. On Thursday, the Martinsville Speedway pace car was on display at the club locations and the children decorated a welcome banner that will be displayed at the speedway this weekend during the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 NASCAR Cup Series race.

“Thank you to The NASCAR Foundation for once again bringing its Speediatrics Fun Day Festival to the Martinsville area,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “It is so much fun working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Blue Ridge and spending time with the next generation of NASCAR fans.”

In the days following the event, the kids will participate in a step challenge using pedometer watches from The NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Fit Kits made possible by a generous donation from the Harvest Youth Board. The NASCAR Foundation will also provide a financial grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge to further fund their efforts for kids.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America Announced as Official Youth Community Partner of NASCAR

Boys & Girls Clubs of America Announced as Official Youth Community Partner of NASCAR

NASCAR and Boys & Girls Clubs of America announced a multiyear partnership Sunday that will support the nonprofit’s mission of enabling and enriching the lives of young people. As the Official Youth Community Partner of NASCAR, Boys & Girls Clubs of America will work with NASCAR and industry stakeholders to engage more than 4.6 million youth and teens across the country with NASCAR content and experiences.

The nationwide partnership will focus on three core areas — STEM education, career development and diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives — and extend across all NASCAR platforms and race tracks. Programming will include both virtual and at-track experiences with an emphasis on local Boys & Girls Club locations within NASCAR race markets.

Partnership efforts will build on the continuing work of The NASCAR Foundation to advance children’s well-being, including ongoing relationships with several Boys & Girls Clubs across the country.

“As a community leader, Boys & Girls Clubs of America continues to have immeasurable impact on the lives of our country’s youth, and NASCAR looks forward to engaging those efforts in meaningful ways,” said Steve Phelps, president of NASCAR. “Through this partnership and together with the NASCAR industry, we have boundless opportunities to advance the mission and objectives of Boys & Girls Clubs of America while at the same time introducing young future fans to our great sport.”

Said Boys & Girls Clubs of America president and CEO Jim Clark: “Kids and teens need safe places and caring mentors now more than ever, and local Boys & Girls Clubs around the country are doing whatever it takes to empower youth and build new opportunities so they can achieve every success in life. We are very excited to partner with NASCAR to elevate this support in communities even further, enabling more high-quality programing and experiences that will have a positive impact on kids and teens.”

As young people continue to emerge from the pandemic and navigate virtual learning, the first year of the partnership will focus on developing high-quality education programming that will live on MyFuture, Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s digital learning platform.

Additionally, NASCAR’s work with Boys & Girls Clubs of America will focus on career development and mentoring across a breadth of industry disciplines and will include engagement with industry executives and other employees.

Throughout the partnership, NASCAR will collaborate with drivers, teams and tracks to amplify the sport’s commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and deepen the engagement with Club youth and teens. NASCAR partners will also have the opportunity to integrate with the new partnership, and several partners will look to build on their own longstanding relationships with Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Eric Shanks, CEO and executive producer of FOX Sports, and Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, are both members of the non-profit’s Board of Governors. Shanks attended Boys & Girls Clubs as a youth and is now a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs Alumni Hall of Fame. Next month, Lazarus will serve as chair of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Annual Conference.

NBCUniversal, parent company of NASCAR Premier Partner Xfinity, has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs for nearly 20 years to drive digital equity. The company has opened WiFi-Connected Lift Zones at Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, including an upcoming Martinsville, Virginia, location to celebrate the NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash, to provide a safe space for students to access Internet for free to participate in distance learning and conduct schoolwork.

Coca-Cola is currently celebrating 75 years of partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and is also represented on the non-profit’s Board of Governors. The NASCAR Premier Partner is also a founding sponsor of the non-profit’s Workforce Readiness Strategy, supporting essential skill development, career exploration, employability skills and credentialing, and work-based learning opportunities for young people at Clubs. Coca-Cola, NASCAR and Boys & Girls Clubs of America look forward to partnering.

Toyota’s partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America is focused on closing the opportunity gap for the nation’s youth and inspiring future innovators, problem solvers and leaders who will make a positive impact on the community.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America provides high-quality programming that helps level the playing field and provide opportunities to young people that will help them build the skills they need to become the leaders, innovators and problem-solvers who shape the world.

#NASCAR Foundation Seeking Funds

The NASCAR Foundation is seeking funds to continue its mission of helping children learn how to win, both inside and outside of the classroom, through a variety of educational opportunities. It is crucial that you join us to provide the innovative technological resources to students and teachers in the Kansas City area to help equalize the playing field in academics, as well as easing the financial burden carried by teachers.

They have until September 30th to reach their $15,000 goal to impact thousands of students in Kansas City schools grades K-12 through providing classroom donations focusing on innovation and technology this October.

How Your Donation Helps

  • $30 will provide a classroom with a new 3D printer filament roll to learn engineering and design!
  • $50 will provide a fit bit to a math class and provide data for hands-on projects!
  • $250 will provide an iPod to serve as a teaching resource to music teachers!
  • $500 will provide a tablet for classroom instruction!
  • $2500 will provide a 3D printer (including a full year of supplies) to help children learn design and cultivate their engineering skills!

Their Story

Currently, each school year teachers provide approximately 77 percent of the school supplies needed in their classrooms and yet many children still start each year without even the most basic supplies. While basic supplies might be within the financial means or provision of local community efforts, the higher cost items simply cannot be provided through these channels.

The NASCAR Foundation began identifying schools and teachers who presented requests for funding of innovative technological resources, including laptops, tablets, 3D printers, books, and related supplies. This September The NASCAR Foundation has been able to support schools in the Richmond, VA and Chicago, IL areas:

Richmond: The NASCAR Foundation funded 18 classroom donation projects, which impact 3,400 students in grades K-12.

Chicago: The NASCAR Foundation funded 22 classroom donation projects, which impact 4,500 students in grades K-12.

As School Begins
The #NASCAR Foundation Brings Resources to Classrooms

#NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Jamie Dick and the NASCAR Foundation bringing resources to classrooms.

Last Thursday Lorene King, Executive Director of the NASCAR Foundation, visited Laburnum Elementary in Richmond, Virginia! It was the third day of school for Henrico County students! The boys and girls in the 4th and 5th grades at Laburnum Elementary quickly filed into the “Cafetorium” as the principal, Mrs. Nicole Henderson, instructed them to sit on the floor for a soon-to-arrive visitor.

What a delight to see their faces light up as NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Jamie Dick stood up in his Viva Auto Group fire suit and told them what it’s like to be a race car driver. The 25-year-old emphasized that his success is not only because he can drive a car, but also because of his business knowledge learned by staying in school to finish his education and receive his master’s degree.

The students eagerly asked questions:
  • Does it get hot in the car?
  • Have you ever flipped over?
  • How do you get a drink?
  • Are you friends with the other drivers?
  • Do you know Joey Logano?

As school begins across the country, The NASCAR Foundation is bringing resources to classrooms in our racing communities. Within the Richmond market, nearly 3,400 students in 16 schools benefited from donations of innovative technological resources, including tablets, calculators, fit bits, white boards, and projectors – resources requested by teachers to help inspire their students!

Ms. King is very happy that they can provide these resources and facilitate experiences for students in our racing communities! "Won’t you join us as we inspire these students to stay in school and embark on a journey of life-long learning"

2nd Annual Championship Taste Event Gives Back To Homestead Community

unit at Homestead Hospital, culminating with a $100,000 check presentation.

Building on its commitment to support children’s health care in the South Miami-Dade area, The NASCAR Foundation hosted its second annual Championship Taste event Thursday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

NASCAR drivers, fans and friends gathered at Homestead-Miami Speedway to enjoy a unique dining experience while raising money for the Speediatrics unit at Homestead Hospital, culminating with a $100,000 check presentation. The donation ensures that Miami-area children will continue to receive premium care and treatment in a colorful and fun NASCAR-themed environment.

“We’re so thankful for the wonderful sponsors, restaurants, drivers and the NASCAR fans and family who made Championship Taste at Homestead-Miami Speedway a success,” The NASCAR Foundation Executive Director Lorene King said. “We’re especially grateful for the partnership with the Pineapple Ladies of the Homestead Hospital Foundation who rallied the local community in support of the event. The best part about this event is that all funds raised stay local and ensure that Speediatrics will continue its important work in South Florida.”

Located at Homestead Hospital, the Speediatrics unit is dedicated to caring for the local community’s children. The NASCAR-themed, eight-bed unit includes a pediatric trauma room where the most severely ill or injured children can be stabilized, and is staffed by highly experienced pediatric emergency physicians and skilled nurses. Featuring colorful artwork and décor designed to ease anxiety and lift the spirits of young patients, Speediatrics has provided hope and comfort to thousands of children and their families.

“Last year, the Betty Jane France Children's Emergency Center treated more than 25,000 young patients,” Homestead Hospital CEO Bill Duquette said. “Through the generosity of The NASCAR Foundation, children are able to receive the care they need in a colorful, cheerful and calming environment."

This year’s event featured 23 South Florida restaurants showcasing their best menu items of 2013, including Celebrity Chef Adrianne Calvo’s restaurant, Chef Adrianne’s Vineyard Restaurant and Wine Bar. Participants had the opportunity to vote on their favorite restaurants from the night. Honors went to: Marker 88 (Overall Fan Favorite), Schnebly Redlands Winery (Best Drink), Ocean Reef (Bestf Appetizer), Smoke and Spice (Best Entrée) and Misha’s Cupcakes (Best Dessert).

In one of the evening’s highlights, Chef Adrianne and NASCAR national series drivers Aric Almirola, David Ragan, Johanna Long and Jennifer Jo Cobb, along with NASCAR Next drivers Gray Gaulding, Ryan Gifford, Ben Kennedy and Kenzie Ruston, squared off in a cooking contest. The group followed a recipe to create a spicy pinto beans and smoked sausage dish with all meats donated by Eckrich. The contest paired seasoned veterans with rising stars on a playing field other than a race track. The winners of this annual contest were Aric Almirola and Ben Kennedy, besting last year’s winner Johanna Long.

Other notables in attendance included NASCAR President and The NASCAR Foundation Vice Chairman Mike Helton, foundation board member and former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Rusty Wallace, Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer, ESPN analyst and former three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion crew chief Ray Evernham, Miss Sprint Cups Kim Coon and Brooke Werner and the reigning Miss Florida Myrrhanda Jones.

In January, The NASCAR Foundation will host the Taste of the 24, a similar event that kicks off the Rolex 24 At Daytona weekend with fabulous music, great food and non-stop racing. The Taste of 24 will benefit The NASCAR Foundation Scholarship Program for graduating high school seniors in Volusia County.

Four Finalists - Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award

The NASCAR Foundation announced today the four finalists for the 2013 Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award.

2013 Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award.

Finalists Duncan Dobie, Lisa Hall, Don Post and Richard Johnson each will receive a minimum $25,000 donation for the charity of their choice from The NASCAR Foundation, with the national winner being awarded $100,000.

Each finalist will also receive one VIP at-track NASCAR experience during the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup at either Kansas Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Martinsville Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway.

The award honors the unwavering commitment that The NASCAR Foundation Chairwoman Betty Jane France has demonstrated with her philanthropic and community efforts. The award is given annually to one dedicated NASCAR fan who has made a profound impact on children in his or her local community.

These finalists truly demonstrate the generosity, compassion and commitment that embody the spirit of the award,” said France. “All four finalists have a remarkable story regarding their own philanthropic efforts in their respective communities, and share the extraordinary traits that are so prevalent throughout NASCAR’s fan base.

NASCAR fans, friends and families are encouraged to vote for one of the four finalists by logging on to www.NASCAR.com/award between now and midnight ET on Dec. 5. Fans are also encouraged to join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #BJFHAward. The finalist with the most votes will be announced as the national winner live on stage during the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards at Wynn Las Vegas on Dec. 6. The winner also will receive a 2014 Chevrolet SS from Chevrolet. Chevrolet is the official car sponsor of this year’s Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award.

The four finalists:

Duncan Dobie (Marietta, Ga.) has assisted more than 12,000 children with cancer over the past 30 years as a teacher, mentor and motivational figure at Camp Sunshine. After his daughter was diagnosed with leukemia at a young age, Dobie set out on a path to share his gifts of love, patience, acceptance and hope with other children battling cancer. He has served Camp Sunshine in many capacities, including counselor, photographer, swimming instructor, lifeguard and supervisor on fishing, rafting and snow-skiing trips.

Lisa Hall (Bedford, N.H.) has served over the past 10 years as a court appointed special advocate (CASA). CASA volunteers support children who are in the court system and often times removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. As a CASA volunteer, Hall advocates for a child’s best interest in court and the community, and participates in continuing education courses related to courtroom procedures, social service, the juvenile justice system and the special needs of abused and neglected children. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives. Volunteers like Hall typically spend an average of 1.5 years working with and serving their children until they are in a safe and permanent home.

Don Post (Kansas City, Mo.) was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease", in 1980 and was told he only had three to five years to live. He retired from his professional job and embarked on a 33-year mission of donating his time and talent to charities in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Post has been a volunteer for the March of Dimes "Bikers for Babies" motorcycle ride for 18 years and committee chairman since 2010. His leadership has been instrumental in making this event the #1 charity ride in the nation, helping to raise $6.8 million for March of Dimes. His humility is matched by his wisdom, sense of humor, and desire to help the tiniest and most helpless of all. Post has received a number of volunteer service awards from multiple non-profit organizations in recognition of his dedication and loyalty. He spends most of his days organizing volunteers for the annual "March for Babies" and "Bikers for Babies" events.

Richard Johnson (St. Johns, Fla.) has more than five years of experience working with charities to organize events and fundraise for children with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. A tireless advocate in raising awareness and funds to get desperately needed help for children with Alpha-1, Johnson has organized and hosted an annual “Friends for a Cure Golf Tournament” in which the proceeds benefited Alpha-1 Foundation research programs. To set an example for others and reinforce the importance of family testing, Richard helped launch the Alpha-1 Foundation’s “It’s All in The Family” campaign by creating a video testimonial with his two children, who were diagnosed with the genetic condition in 2008. He has also been active in the Alpha-1 Kids program by developing educational materials and supporting parents with children who have recently been diagnosed.

NASCAR Dreams Come True in Atlanta

AtlantaNASCARDreams
Thanks to the generous donors and supporters, members of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta were given a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Atlanta Motor Speedway as they embarked on our latest NASCAR Dreams activation earlier this month.

Participants had the opportunity to meet Richard Petty Motorsports VP of Competition, Sammy Johns, and former Crew Chief and NASCAR Hall of Famer, Dale Inman. They also learned a great deal from Manager of Safety Inspections, Jamie Rigot and Clint Bowyer's team engineer, Tim O'Brien.

The entire day was focused on STEM education and how engineering relates to the sport of NASCAR. The group ended their visit with what was for many, their first NASCAR race.

The NASCAR Foundation would like to say thank you to everyone who made the Atlanta NASCAR Dreams weekend a success! For more on our exciting day, take a look at their Facebook album.
