Jeff Gordon’s Camaro for a Cure

Jeff Gordon’s Camaro for a Cure

I Entered – Fingers Crossed

Worldwide, 300,000 families each year hear the words: Your child has cancer. Every day in the United States more than 40 kids are diagnosed with cancer. Two-thirds of children who are treated for cancer will suffer long-term effects from their treatment, including loss of hearing and sight, heart disease, secondary cancers, cognitive disabilities, infertility and more. But you can offer these families hope by investing in childhood cancer research with Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation.

Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation has granted more than $25 million to fund innovations that improve patients’ quality of life, treatment programs that increase survivorship, and medical research dedicated to finding a cure for the No. 1 cause of death by disease for kids. The funds granted by JGCF are made possible by the generosity of donors who support fundraisers such as Camaro For A Cure.

You can help this worthy cause by purchasing a ticket to win Jeff Gordon’s Personal Corvette!

Love, Ella and Leo

Love, Ella and Leo (Jeff Gordon's Children)
NASCAR Star, Jeff Gordon was married to Ingrid Vandebosch in the year 2006. The couple welcomed two children named Ella Sofia in 2007 and Leo Benjamin in 2010.

Gordon's immense influence on NASCAR was highlighted Friday during a star-packed Hall of Fame induction ceremony befitting a driver who changed the trajectory of an entire sport. Further, Gordon won four titles over seven seasons.

The HOF Induction Ceremony proved to be a family affair as Jeff's children joined him on stage and shared what their father's accomplishments meant to them.

On the day their dad was set to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Ella and Leo Gordon wrote him letters to mark the occasion.

“I hope that the things I can teach them and these experiences that we get to have together will catapult them into whatever they’re passionate about, that they want to strive for,” Gordon said, “and understand the hard work that comes along with it.”

Ella and Leo Gordon - a.k.a. Jeff Gordon's Kids - Gave A Pretty Great Starting Command

It was a memorable moment for Gordon, who drives the No. 24 Chevrolet SS for Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

"Highlight for me. The day couldn't be bad after that. That was so, so cool, and they nailed it. I'm just so, so proud of them," said Gordon. "So funny, and Leo, he had to put his little engine rev in there at the end, which I thought just kind of put it over the top. As soon as the red flag came, I went back to the bus and rewound it and watched it with them, and they were just beaming."

James Bickford to drive for Bob Bruncati Racing

James Bickford (age 15) won the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model championship at All American Speedway in his rookie year in 2013. He has been chosen to race the 2014 season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

Driving for Bob Bruncati Racing in the No. 6 Sunrise Ford, he will replace Derek Thorn, who is the reigning K&N West champion.

In 2013, Bickford, whose cousin is NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon, made the transition to racing Late Models in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series at All American Speedway in Roseville. After only four starts, he racked up his first Late Model win on May 11, 2013.

Driving the No. 25 Chevrolet sponsored by Buffship.com, Red Line Oil, Eibach Springs, Catchyoureye.com, Cooke Orthotics, Alpine Stars, and Piner’s Welding Supply, Bickford is the youngest driver in the 58-year history of All American Speedway to win a Late Model Series race and championship.

Bickford has been adamant about racing in the K&N Series. He had hoped to race a couple of races last year. He had a car and everything but a motor. Last fall, Bob Bruncati reached out to Bickford about driving one of his K&N West Series cars.

On Dec. 5, Bickford went to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale to test for Bruncati.

“The test at Irwindale was phenomenal,” Bickford said. “I didn’t know anything about the track except for racing it on a simulator on my computer. I went out and on the first lap I thought it was pretty easy. I went full throttle. It was a lot different than racing my Late Model. At the end I ran a really fast lap (18.41), and I came close to beating the K&N Series track record at the track.”

Jeff Gordon Drives Out Whooping Cough

Famed NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon is pursuing a different sort of goal in his off-season – raising awareness about whooping cough.

Gordon, who has two children ages 3 and 6, said staying healthy is a big priority for his entire family.

“With kids it’s just germs everywhere, we’re kind of germ-freaks you know taking shoes off when we walk in the door, washing hands, probably overdoing it and you know, covering your mouth when you cough,” Gordon told FoxNews.com.

However, Gordon said it wasn’t until he joined the Sounds of Pertussis campaign, a national education program from March of Dimes and Sanofi Pasteur, that he realized he might unintentionally be putting his children at risk for pertussis, or whooping cough – a highly contagious and often serious disease.

“That’s what got me interested in becoming involved, is because as a parent I didn’t know that I was putting them at risk because I needed the adult booster,” Gordon said. “…Everybody (says), ‘Oh I’ve heard of whooping cough,’ but…they don’t realize that you have to prevent it from continuing to spread.”

One of the goals of this year’s Sounds of Pertussis campaign is to educate adults on the importance of getting an adult tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination. While most infants receive the vaccine at around 2 months old, the effects wear off after five to 10 years.

Without a booster, parents run the risk of contracting the disease and passing it to un-vaccinated infants – for whom it can be deadly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States is experiencing one of the largest outbreaks of pertussis in approximately 50 years, with more than 41,000 cases and 18 deaths reported in 2012.

“Eighty percent of the time…these young infants are getting it from family members so it’s really about preventative (efforts),” Gordon said. “Prior to the baby being born, family members, when they come to the hospital, when they come to the home to visit, you know they need to make sure they’re protected.”

Gordon said seeing a video of a child with whooping cough on the Sounds of Pertussis website made him even more determined to spread awareness of the disease – and the importance of the adult vaccine.

“(The vaccine) is quick and over in a hurry and then the benefits are fantastic, and especially if you click on the video and hear that young baby with that whooping cough you’ll never forget that and you’ll realize, I cannot allow myself to bring this into our family,” Gordon said.

Gordon said he feels lucky that his children have been healthy – and that in addition to getting the Tdap vaccine, he and his wife make sure their children eat healthy and nutritiously at home.

“Our kids are great about eating vegetables and fish and we don’t go to fast food restaurants, we really try to eat healthy,” Gordon said. “We make the meals a family event where every night we’re sitting at the table, eating together, talking.”

While Gordon said it’s been tougher to stay in racing shape since he became a father, his children are also a big motivating factor for him.

“It’s definitely more challenging because you don’t have as much time, but at the same time they keep me very active and running around, so I look at it now as, how I set an example for them?” Gordon said.

NASCAR Race Mom's a Winner!

They say no good deed goes unpunished. As you know NASCAR Race Mom is a huge fan of all the charitable endeavors of the NASCAR Community. NRM is an especially big fan of the benevolent work of Sprint Cup Drivers #24 Jeff Gordon and his teammate #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation

In fact, just a couple of days ago, NASCAR Race Mom posted about the Jeff Gordon's Children's Raffle which ended today. The proceeds of the raffle benefited the needed funding for childhood cancer research and treatment.

NASCAR Race Mom made sure to buy her ten tickets for the raffle. While I did not win the first nor second prize, NRM was just notified that she won the #9 prize (2005 JG Daytona picture, 1998 JG diecast, 1999 JG diecast/stats book).

NASCAR Race Mom - won the 2005 JG Daytona picture, 1998 JG diecast, 1999 JG diecast/stats book

It is too bad that the picture is not autographed. NASCAR Race Mom still does not have a Jeff Gordon autograph for her NASCAR Collection. However, that does not dampen the joyous feel generated by the fact that NRM was able to help kids in need AND receive a nice reward for that good deed!

A greater responsibility

Most Racecar Drivers do it - However, Jeff Gordon does it really well!  This is one of the reasons, NASCAR #24 is one of NASCAR Race Mom's favorite drivers!

What Gordon recalls from his first championship, in 1995, might surprise you.

“I realized right away you don’t have this kind of success on your own,” Gordon said. “A lot of people behind the scenes make it happen, and you have to remember that.

“You have a greater responsibility in life than just driving a race car. And that’s a good problem to have. It’s a greater weight on your shoulders, but I think it’s why certain people get put in that position. They need to be tested or they can handle it.”

In 1999, he established the Jeff Gordon Foundation. In 2011, it became the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation.

The focus is on research and support for children and families dealing with pediatric cancers. Since its establishment, the foundation has raised $13.5 million. In the past several years, the foundation has made donations in the United States and Africa totaling almost $5 million.

“Jeff is incredibly passionate about this,” said Trish Kriger, executive director of the JGCF. “This will not be something he ever walks away from. He’s been blessed with two healthy, wonderful children.

“But he sees so many kids who have the same story. One day they’re playing. The next day, they don’t feel quite right. The third day, they go to the doctor. The fourth day, they have cancer. He knows lives can change on a dime.”

Gordon also knows the United States is not the only place where children and their families are affected by cancer. His foundation has taken an active role in Africa, especially Rwanda.

“Over here (in the United States), the rates for remission are really growing, in the 80 percent range,” Gordon said. “We can focus on the long-term effects of those treatments as well as the 20 percent or so that aren’t curable, yet.

“The thing about Rwanda, as well as many other countries in Africa, is the impact you can have. A dollar goes so much further there. And when someone is being treated with a mild pain reliever for a very severe illness, especially cancer, that’s not right. Over there, we can prevent deaths. That’s hard to find, hard to do, yet over there it’s not, and we should be doing it.”

The families in need of help and hope and the work done by doctors and scientists on curing pediatric cancer never are far from his thoughts.

“There are days when I feel really good, and I have people patting me on the back and telling me what great things I’m doing,” Gordon said. “And I’m meeting families whose children went to a hospital we support and whose lives were saved. That feels really good.

“But as long as there’s one child dying, and unfortunately a lot more than that are, we’re not doing enough.”

Happy Birthday Leo!

Happy 3rd Birthday to Leo Benjamin Gordon

Jeff and Ingrid's son, Leo, loves playing with cars, especially Papa's #24 die cast cars. He really likes to play with them at home on the floor or table. The only thing was, he didn't have a race track to race them on, not to mention a few scratches that may have happened while doing a burnout with one of his cars.

Well, Mama talked to Papa and Papa talked to Opa (John Bickford), then Opa started designing with the help of Hendrick Motorsports' graphic design group. The result? Leo's very own 24"x36" vinyl re-positionable race track that he can take with him anywhere he goes!

Now, Leo's always got a track that he can race his #24 die cast cars on, that also helps prevent the surfaces he's racing on from being scratched.

They in the process of having Leo's race track reproduced and will have some available at www.JeffGordonStore.com in the near future.

Bickford Steps Up At All-American

Jeff Gordon’s 15-Year-Old Cousin Gets First NASCAR Win

June 5, 2013 - 3:28pm

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — James Bickford is spending the summer between his freshman and sophomore years of high school just as he has for the last 10 summers. He’s getting ready for his next race.

His father, Tom, figures the 15-year-old has competed in about 600 races since he started driving at age five. He won 68 of 75 races entered in just one of three different quarter midget divisions he raced in during 2007.

Young Bickford started his career in quarter midgets the same as his cousin, four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon. Bickford placed third in his first race, one-upping Gordon’s first-ever race finish of fourth. Tom Bickford’s brother John is Gordon’s stepfather.

James moved to full-size race cars this year. He’s a rookie in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Models at All-American Speedway, a third-mile paved oval at the Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville, Calif. He cleared a huge hurdle May 11 when he won his first career NASCAR feature. It was a huge improvement over the uncertainty he felt in his first late model start only a few weeks earlier.

“I practiced a couple of times, but there was no competition on the track,” Bickford said. “Opening night I knew how to drive the car, but I didn’t know how to race it. I had a lot of it figured out by the end of the night. I learned a lot but still have a lot to learn.”

He finished fourth in his first Late Model feature. Three race nights later he didn’t think he had a chance on the night he won.

“We qualified ninth fastest and started in the back of the feature. I thought the car was terrible. It had a huge push. All if a sudden car started coming in. It must have been the tires. I slowly started working my way toward the front. I got some breaks and I was in the right place at the right time.”

Bickford took the lead on Lap 44 of the 60-lap feature race and held onto it through a restart with three laps to go to take the win.

“We got to Victory Lane with no scratches on the car,” Bickford said.

The Napa, Calif., driver and his family team raced about 48 weeks a year for a decade. He worked his way from quarter midgets through bandoleros and then legends. In total he’s won 30 championships, 15 of them in quarter midgets.

Bickford knew he wanted to drive race cars by age three. He was born in 1998, the year Gordon, from nearby Vallejo, Calif., won his third NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.

“James begged me to take him to the races when he was three,” his dad said. “Then he started begging me to drive race cars.”

He got his first quarter midget as a belated fifth birthday present.

After a lot of success in quarter midgets, Bickford arrived at a crossroad in 2009. It was time to advance and bandolero cars were a natural next step. The expense of a new car and equipment exceeded the ability of a reasonable family budget.

“I told James we just couldn’t do it anymore,” Tom Bickford said.

“Dad said if I could come up with the money we’d keep racing,” James said. “I was desperate to keep going. My racing career was about to end.”

He was an eleven-year-old in need of about $5,000 to keep racing. He did some entrepreneurial thinking and devised a plan in 2009 to raise sponsorship funds. He organized, promoted, marketed and hosted a golf benefit he called the KGA (Kids Golf Association) Tournament. The event was held at Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville, Calif. Bickford’s mom Teresa waited in the car while the boy walked into the club’s office to sell the idea to the general manager. After the second meeting, Bickford walked out of GM Jason Boldt’s office with a sweet deal to use the course and facilities. Boldt said the fifth grader was professional and determined in his sales pitch and event planning.

“We had a $50 entry fee and sold hole sponsorships for $100 each,” Bickford said, noting that cousin Jeff chipped in as a hole sponsor and was a donor to a fund-raising raffle.

With capital in hand, Bickford was soon behind the wheel of a pre-owned Bandolero car. One of the golf tournament sponsors, Buffalo’s Shipping Post, became a car sponsor. The Napa, Calif., company specializes in wine shipping, and is a retailer of Jeff Gordon-brand wines. Bickford went on to post six wins in 12 Bandolero starts in 2009. He moved to Legends cars 2011-12.

Bickford had an unexpected setback late last August that ended his legends season and disrupted his plans for 2013.

The day before he was to be fitted for a seat in a late model that was under consideration for this year, he broke an arm playing high school football.

“I ended up at the bottom of a pile,” Bickford said. “As soon as I tried to get up I knew I broke it.”

“The last thing the car owner said to me when we set up the fitting was ‘don’t get hurt,’” Bickford said. “Maybe that jinxed me. I learned two things from the experience. Don’t get jinxed, and don’t play football if you’re 5’3” and weigh 120 pounds.”

Although sidelined from driving, Bickford attended the last five races of his legends’ racing season.

“When you’re racing legends, you feel like you’re part of a community,” Bickford said. “I wanted to support everyone else. It was the proper thing to do.”

During the layoff, the Bickfords decided to field their own late model in 2013 with primary sponsorship from Buffalo’s Shipping Post.

In five starts this year, Bickford’s record at All-American includes the win, four top-fives and five top-10s. He’s second in track points, 31 behind leader Ron Chunn. Late Models are NASCAR Finalist Division IV at the track.

Bickford’s Chevrolet is based on a Lefthander chassis and powered by a used crate engine. Tom Bickford is car owner and co-crew chief. Rich Fields is co-crew chief and spotter. Mark Olson rounds out the crew. In addition to Buffalo’s Shipping Post/buffship.com, sponsors include Redline Synthetic Oil, Eibach Springs and Catch Your Eye MotorSport Graphics.

Bickford is hoping for more wins while learning as much as he can this year.

“We’re second in track points, but we’re about 30 points behind,” Bickford said. “The point race is way in the back of my mind. The biggest thing is to keep learning.”
