#NASCAR Foundation Seeking Funds

The NASCAR Foundation is seeking funds to continue its mission of helping children learn how to win, both inside and outside of the classroom, through a variety of educational opportunities. It is crucial that you join us to provide the innovative technological resources to students and teachers in the Kansas City area to help equalize the playing field in academics, as well as easing the financial burden carried by teachers.

They have until September 30th to reach their $15,000 goal to impact thousands of students in Kansas City schools grades K-12 through providing classroom donations focusing on innovation and technology this October.

How Your Donation Helps

  • $30 will provide a classroom with a new 3D printer filament roll to learn engineering and design!
  • $50 will provide a fit bit to a math class and provide data for hands-on projects!
  • $250 will provide an iPod to serve as a teaching resource to music teachers!
  • $500 will provide a tablet for classroom instruction!
  • $2500 will provide a 3D printer (including a full year of supplies) to help children learn design and cultivate their engineering skills!

Their Story

Currently, each school year teachers provide approximately 77 percent of the school supplies needed in their classrooms and yet many children still start each year without even the most basic supplies. While basic supplies might be within the financial means or provision of local community efforts, the higher cost items simply cannot be provided through these channels.

The NASCAR Foundation began identifying schools and teachers who presented requests for funding of innovative technological resources, including laptops, tablets, 3D printers, books, and related supplies. This September The NASCAR Foundation has been able to support schools in the Richmond, VA and Chicago, IL areas:

Richmond: The NASCAR Foundation funded 18 classroom donation projects, which impact 3,400 students in grades K-12.

Chicago: The NASCAR Foundation funded 22 classroom donation projects, which impact 4,500 students in grades K-12.

Check out our impact stories and learn more about our programs by visiting us on our website. Be sure to follow our efforts on Facebook and Twitter!

As School Begins
The #NASCAR Foundation Brings Resources to Classrooms

#NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Jamie Dick and the NASCAR Foundation bringing resources to classrooms.

Last Thursday Lorene King, Executive Director of the NASCAR Foundation, visited Laburnum Elementary in Richmond, Virginia! It was the third day of school for Henrico County students! The boys and girls in the 4th and 5th grades at Laburnum Elementary quickly filed into the “Cafetorium” as the principal, Mrs. Nicole Henderson, instructed them to sit on the floor for a soon-to-arrive visitor.

What a delight to see their faces light up as NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Jamie Dick stood up in his Viva Auto Group fire suit and told them what it’s like to be a race car driver. The 25-year-old emphasized that his success is not only because he can drive a car, but also because of his business knowledge learned by staying in school to finish his education and receive his master’s degree.

The students eagerly asked questions:
  • Does it get hot in the car?
  • Have you ever flipped over?
  • How do you get a drink?
  • Are you friends with the other drivers?
  • Do you know Joey Logano?

As school begins across the country, The NASCAR Foundation is bringing resources to classrooms in our racing communities. Within the Richmond market, nearly 3,400 students in 16 schools benefited from donations of innovative technological resources, including tablets, calculators, fit bits, white boards, and projectors – resources requested by teachers to help inspire their students!

Ms. King is very happy that they can provide these resources and facilitate experiences for students in our racing communities! "Won’t you join us as we inspire these students to stay in school and embark on a journey of life-long learning"

Buckle Up, Teens and Parents

Three Hands-On Toyota TeenDrive365 Events Coming to Town

Parents can help steer their teenage drivers to safety by joining them during Toyota’s 11th year of offering free, driving skills programs. Toyota’s comprehensive TeenDrive365 platform gives families tips and resources for the critical first year of teen driving. The TeenDrive365 teen driver experience will go on the road to Pearl, Mississippi; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Honolulu, Hawaii to teach defensive driving skills, crash avoidance techniques and the dangers of distracted driving.

Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death among teens. Recognizing that parents play a crucial role in developing habits of their teens behind the wheel, Toyota’s program uniquely requires a parent or guardian to actively participant in the event with the teen. The teen driver experience is open to pre-drivers and new drivers with a valid driver's license or learner's permit.

This year’s events will take place in:

  • Pearl, Mississippi on Sept. 27 and 28 at Bass Pro Shops
  • Ann Arbor, Michigan on Oct. 4 and 5 at Washtenaw Community College
  • Honolulu, Hawaii on Nov. 8 and 9 at Aloha Stadium

Registration is required and open now at events.teendrive365.com.

“Toyota is committed to bringing parents and teens together to better navigate the important first years on the road,” said Michael Rouse, Toyota’s vice president of diversity, philanthropy and community affairs. “Through this year’s three hands-on safe driving programs around the country, coupled with our online TeenDrive365 resources, we hope to make the roads a little safer for everyone.”

The TeenDrive365 teen driver experience events are two-and-a-half-hour sessions that involve both driving time and classroom discussions. Going beyond what is taught in standard driver education courses, professional instructors cover vehicle maintenance tips, defensive maneuvers and a number of other helpful safe driving techniques. Parents and teens will make mutual driving agreements and learn communication tips to continue at-home learning.

For more than a decade Toyota has provided teen driver safety resources to help drivers conquer the road safely. TeenDrive365.com offers free online teen safety resources to parents, teens, educators and schools.

Matt Kenseth Creates Education-Based Children’s Book Series

Matt Kenseth’s Race Against Bullying Children’s Book Debuts at Dollar General on National Youth Literacy Day

On National Youth Literacy Day, Matt Kenseth debuted Matt Kenseth’s Race Against Bullying, his first children’s book aimed at educating and empowering children to make good choices if faced with bullying situations. Kenseth, a two-time Daytona 500 Champion and the NASCAR Sprint Cup series driver of the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry, released the book with his wife Katie at Joe Gibbs Racing headquarters.

Published by Bendon, Inc., Matt Kenseth’s Race Against Bullying is available today for purchase exclusively at more than 11,500 Dollar General stores nationwide and online at www.dollargeneral.com. It is also the first installment of a four-part series of educational children’s books that Matt and Katie Kenseth championed. The series is designed for family reading for children ages 4 through 8 to become more self-confident and empowered to make good choices.

“As a parent of three small children, it’s natural to worry about the issues they will face while growing up,” said Kenseth, the 2003 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion. “Both Katie and I believe that openly talking about these issues is the best way to prepare them. This book is designed to help families discuss the effects of bullying with their kids. We believe it’s important our kids not only know how to deal with a bully, but also understand that it’s not OK to act like one.”

“We’re excited to partner with Matt to raise awareness and provide solutions to childhood bullying, especially as it reflects our mission of Serving Others,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “The project also combines Dollar General’s passion for literacy and reading through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation with the strong representation Matt brings to Dollar General, Joe Gibbs Racing and NASCAR.”

According to www.stopbullying.gov, more than 70 percent of students say they have seen bullying in their schools and less than 30 percent of students who are bullied notify an adult. More statistics, further reading about bullying, and ways that adults can help can be found at the stopbullying.gov website.

Kenseth, an avid reader, has helped support literacy programs throughout his career and currently serves as an ambassador for the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Sharing in both Dollar General and Kenseth’s commitment to literacy is long-time Kenseth sponsor CITIZEN Watch, who made a $25,000 donation on Kenseth’s behalf to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation in honor of the book launch.

“Our new brand statement Better Starts Now is about reaching inside yourself to do things better. With the launch of his new book, Matt has shown us that this motto is part of his character both on and off the track," said Jeffrey Cohen, President of Citizen Watch Company of America. "With statistics showing bullying and harassment becoming an even bigger social problem, a book like this is just what is needed to help start the conversation earlier between parents and children. Citizen Watch Company has supported higher education for the past two years as a corporate sponsor of the National Merit Scholarship Foundation and we are proud to expand our educational support with a donation to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation in honor of Matt Kenseth.”

Matt Kenseth’s Race Against Bullying is a 22-page, 10 x 10-inch, soft-cover book, retailing for $3 at more than 11,300 Dollar General stores nationwide and online at www.dollargeneral.com.

Written by Gina Gold, illustrated by Adam Devaney and produced by Judy O Productions, Inc., Matt Kenseth’s Race Against Bullying was created by Matt and Katie Kenseth and is published by Bendon, Inc.
